Two hotels under one roof open in Markham
Two new hotels opened in Markham on Friday, but don’t expect two buildings.
The 187-room Courtyard and 112-room TownePlace Suites by Marriott near Woodbine and Steeles will offer traditional accommodations as well as suites intended for lengthy stays all in the same place.
The development was announced in January by the Markham-based Easton’s Group of Hotels.
The Easton’s Group owns 15 hotels in Ontario and Quebec under the brands Marriott, Hilton and Holiday Inn. The new hotels are the company’s first in Markham.
This is also the first time the company has built two types of hotel accommodations in the same building.
“I can’t in my experience tell you of another hotel where you’ll find two hotels in the same property,” publicist David Eisenstadt said.
He believes the development will be good for Markham, especially because they are owned and operated by local entrepreneur and Easton’s CEO Steve Gupta.
Gupta came to Toronto in the early 1970s with a little over $100 in his pocket. He worked his way up in the real estate world, buying and selling properties across Ontario and the GTA and earning a reputation for his innovation — his first purchase was a gas station on Hwy. 401 that is now the largest service station in Canada.
The hotel opening will also launch the company’s new umbrella brand, the Gupta Group.
The hotels will share facilities such as an indoor pool, fitness centre and meeting area that can hold up to 1,200 people. The hotels are located north of Steeles at 7095 Woodbine Ave.
