Into-Canadian hotelier and real estate developer Steve Gupta was honored with a Doctor of Laws honors degree at a special convocation of Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University.

In his acceptance speech, Gupta, president of the Gupta Group and Easton’s Group of Hotels, dedicated the honor “to my late parents and my Guru, Swami Guruvanandji, who taught me how to live life with happiness, not for happiness…”

Recollecting how he migrated from Patiala (Punjab) to Canada in May 1971 with only $108 in his pocket and how over40 years of hard work, he has built a strong and vibrant foodservice-hospitality industry and real estate organizations.

“I’m a great believer in higher education, but once you’ve learned the basis, I believe that ‘degrees in experience’ are really what count.”

Present at the convocation were Ryerson University Chancellor Lawrence Bloomberg, University President Sheldon Levy, Provost Mohamed Lachemi, graduate students and members of Gupta’s family.

Gupta shared with students and faculty his six key principles of success: passion for hard work; small things can make tremendous difference; develop a laser-sharp focus and determination; learning is like breathing; be optimistic and believe in yourself and in your ability to make things happen.

Gupta also advised his audience that they should build a strong reputation with integrity. With good reputation you can succeed; with a poor reputation you have nothing.

“Always give back to your community,” Gupta concluded with standing ovations from students, faculty and invited guests.

The Gupta Group and the Easton’s Group have become major force in hospitality industry in Canada. He has flagship hotels Hilton, Marriott and Holiday Inn in Toronto to Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Montreal, and other places.

The Group Group is also building condominium towers at two central locations downtown Toronto. The two projects, Gupta claims, are worth a billion dollars.
